On October 8th, 2025, RESTART Spoke 2 workshop “Bridging the Future through Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks and Services” was held at Politecnico di Bari.

Fabrizio Brasca (WindTre).

The meeting provided an opportunity for universities, research centers, and businesses to share the results of the Spoke 2 research projects, coordinated by Prof. Luigi Alfredo Grieco (Bari Polytechnic University), with industrial support from Fabrizio Brasca (WindTre).

The event opened with institutional greetings from Prof. Luigi Alfredo Grieco, Prof. Francesco Prudenzano (Director of the DEI Department of the Polytechnic University of Bari), and Prof. Gennaro Boggia (President of GTTI), followed by a speech by Prof. Nicola Blefari Melazzi (President of the RESTART Foundation), who presented the RESTART program with its challenges and achievements.

Subsequently, the three Spoke 2 projects were presented, including the cascade call projects:

  • ITA NTN (PI: Prof. Luigi Alfredo Grieco – Politecnico di Bari, Vice PI: Prof. Simone Morosi – Università di Firenze)
  • ARCADIA (PI: Prof. Ernestina Cianca – Università di Roma Tor Vergata)
  • NET4FUTURE (PI: Prof. Ilenia Tinnirello – Università di Palermo)

During the event, there was also a graduation ceremony for the RESTART short master’s program in “Management of Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Network Infrastructures”, demonstrating the program’s commitment to training new skills in the field of advanced telecommunications. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Giuseppe Piro, chair of the scientific committee of the short master’s program organized by the Polytechnic University of Bari and co-scientific director of the Spoke 2 laboratory, together with Prof. Grieco.

The highlight of the event was a visit to the iTNT-NS (Integrated Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks and Services Lab) experimental laboratory at Politecnico di Bari. Launched in 2023 with a total investment of €2.5 million, the laboratory is a unique center of excellence in southern Italy and one of the few in Europe focused on the integration of terrestrial and satellite networks.

During the visit, participants, including researchers involved in Spoke 2 projects and representatives of leading local companies, were able to watch live demonstrations showing the laboratory’s main activities in action, also in the presence of the local press, including:

  • emulation of integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks
  • internet of Drones & 5G and Beyond
