The RESTART Foundation – RESearch and innovation on future telecommunications systems and networks, to make Italy more smART – was established to implement initiatives within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and to subsequently leverage the results achieved. Specifically, it implements and manages the Extended Partnership “Telecommunications of the Future”, funded by the Ministry of University and Research.
In this context, the Foundation promotes the development of both fundamental and applied research in the fields of telecommunications, electromagnetism, and all related areas, fostering integration between academia, research centers, and industry.
Even after the conclusion of the “Telecommunications of the Future” Project, the Foundation will continue the activities described above, alongside additional initiatives aimed at enhancing the scientific, economic, social, and cultural impact of the results and the research infrastructures created. Specifically, the Foundation intends to serve the telecommunications sector and its members, including through the following activities:
- consulting and research for individual companies or groups of companies;
- coordination of open-source projects and initiatives to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL);
- support for technical and regulatory standardization processes at the national and European levels;
- support for public institutions;
- management and support for funded projects, including opportunity scouting, consortium creation, and project management;
- think tank initiatives and strategic advisory services;
- communication and scientific and technological dissemination activities, including through events, reports, podcasts, and outreach activities;
- education and training programs, aimed at both the industry and students and young researchers.
To this end, the Foundation may collaborate with public and private entities, promoting technology transfer, the dissemination of developed knowledge, and the construction of an open and collaborative innovation ecosystem in the telecommunications field of the future.
The Foundation’s members include leading Italian universities, nationally renowned research centers, the country’s largest telecommunications operators and companies, integrators, and SMEs, demonstrating the Foundation’s strong roots in the national research and innovation ecosystem.
